People who want to learn a language shouldn't have to suffer through shallow resources, failed attempts, or scattered learning.
They should also be given a clear picture of the path in front of them.
The internet makes it seem like learning a foreign language should be easy and quick. At The Greek Academy, we dislike that false narrative. It is unfair to people who sincerely want to learn, and discouraging to their progress.
How long does it actually take?
Here are some real numbers:
The Foreign Service Institute estimates 1,012 hours to professional proficiency in Greek
University programs in Modern Greek estimate 800 hours to early fluency in Greek
Cambridge estimates 1000-1200 hours to proficiency (for students of English)
At the same time, some apps claim that you can become fluent with 5 or 10 minutes a day.
When we average the numbers above (=970 hours), that math works out as follows:
970 hours = 10 mins/day for 15.94 years
970 hours = 5 mins/day for 31.9 years

From the Founder
I started learning Greek at 18, longing to connect with my family. Now, I’m an adjunct professor, published translator, and engaged researcher.
The reason I went so far with Greek is that, as I continued to learn the language ever more deeply, something unexpected was happening; I was making friends, falling in love with Greek culture and history, and opening a whole world that felt new but familiar.
I started The Greek Academy because I know in my bones that people can actually become fluent, but I am frustrated by how many people I meet who have been led astray by false promises within the language-learning space. There is no reason that quality language education needs to be locked-away in universities, and The Greek Academy is my answer to that.
